Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Dental team member explaining how dental insurance works

Many people assume that dental insurance operates in the same way that medical insurance does, but this is not really the case. For example, while medical insurance is generally reserved for serious issues like physical injuries or major illnesses, dental insurance is designed to be used regularly, ideally on preventive services like dental exams and cleanings. By using your benefits in this way, you can lower your annual oral healthcare costs by preventing the need for emergency or restorative dentistry later.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

Coverage from dental insurance varies depending on the type of treatment you are completing. For example, most plans operate on a 100/80/50 percentage model that looks like the following:

  • Preventive Care – Covers treatments at or close to 100%. Usually includes exams, cleanings, and certain X-rays.
  • Minor Restorative Care – Covers treatments anywhere between 70% and 80% in most cases. Often covers dental fillings and sometimes root canal therapy.
  • Major Restorative Care – Covers treatments up to 50%. Usually includes coverage for dental crowns, bridges, and dentures.
