When it comes to replacing missing teeth, dental implants are the name of the game! They’re able to fully replicate your lost pearly whites in terms of look, feel, and functionality—and quite well! That said, if you’re slated to receive dental implants, you might be wondering if there’s anything you need to handle before your procedure. Here are four tips from your dentist to help you prepare for dental implant surgery and ensure a smooth and stress-free recovery.

Tip #1: Be Well-Informed

Your dentist is the expert on all things relating to oral health, including dental implants—meaning they’re a terrific resource if you have any initial questions about the process. Your dentist will happily review the specifics of your treatment plan with you and ensure you feel comfortable about everything. For example, sometimes a patient might need a little extra prep work done, such as a supplemental bone graft, gum disease therapy, or even a tooth extraction. In any case, knowing what to expect and having a clear idea of what’s going to happen will go a long way.

Tip #2: Follow Pre-Op & Post-Op Instructions

You’ll be given instructions to follow before and after your procedure that concern things like aftercare, diet recommendations, instructions concerning medication, and anything else relevant. None of these guidelines are mere suggestions; they’re crucial for ensuring the future success of your implants! For instance, you might be asked to refrain from eating or drinking anything the night before surgery if you’re going to receive IV sedation. You’ll also be given medication to take post-surgery to assist with your discomfort, as well as special precautions to take while your implant sites heal.

Tip #3: Plan Ahead

Dental implant surgery is a pretty significant procedure by nature, meaning that your body is going to need plenty of time to rest and recuperate. This means you’ll need to plan accordingly! You’re going to need a ride home after the surgery, and it’s also recommended that you have someone stay with you for at least a few hours after the procedure, to keep an eye on you and provide assistance as necessary. You should also stock up on all of the essentials—you’ll need plenty of soft foods to eat for the first segment of your recovery!

Tip #4: Ask for Help When You Need It

Dental implant surgery is a big endeavor; but you don’t have to go at it alone! You shouldn’t hesitate to call your dentist or oral surgeon if you’re experiencing any issues post-surgery. Even though you’ll be back to normal in a few days, it’s perfectly reasonable to have questions or concerns.

Dental implants will change your life, but their success relies on your willingness to do things correctly throughout your aftercare! Following these tips will ensure that your recovery is smooth and that your implants can ultimately do their job.
